Artifact #6 – USS Missouri Commissioning Booklet

Description: A digitized version of the original program from the USS Missouri’s commissioning ceremony, held on June 11, 1944, at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn, NY. Donated by the Callaghan family, the booklet offers a glimpse into the historic moment the battleship officially joined the U.S. Navy fleet. Captain William M. Callaghan took command during the ceremony, which was sponsored by Margaret Truman, daughter of then-Senator Harry S. Truman. The USS Missouri would go on to become the last battleship ever commissioned by the United States.
