Boy Scouts of America’s Largest Event In The World
Pearl Harbor, HI – (November 14, 2018) – The Battleship Missouri Memorial is proud to welcome local Cub Scout Pack 564 for a full day of learning and fun. The 61st Annual Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) connects Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from around the world and is the largest Boy Scouts of America event in the world. The annual event uses amateur radio to link scouts and hams from around the world.
A total of 15 Cub Scouts boarded the Mighty Mo to make contact with scouts in England, Netherlands, Portugal, Columbia, and Washington State. Communication typically involves talking on a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication may also take place, such as video communication, digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone but transmitted by radio), or communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (repeater). Exchanges include such information as name, location (QTH in ham speak), scout rank, age, and hobbies.
In addition to the JOTA event, the USS Missouri Memorial often lends its radio room to local amateur radio stations to promote community involvement, continued learning, and the fruition of history to the local community. Amateur enthusiasts are invited to come aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial the third Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. - noon for open house radio central, where participants will learn about amateur radio while making contact with other stations around the world.
About the Battleship Missouri Memorial
Since opening in January 1999, the Battleship Missouri Memorial has attracted more than 8-million visitors from around the world with a fascinating tour experience showcasing the USS Missouri’s unique place in history. Located a mere ship’s length from the USS Arizona Memorial, the Mighty Mo completes a historical visitor experience that begins with the “day of infamy” and sinking of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and ends with Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.
The USS Missouri had an astounding career over five decades and three wars – World War II, the Korean War, and Desert Storm – after which it was decommissioned and donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Association operates the Battleship Missouri Memorial as a historic attraction and oversees her care and preservation with the support of visitors, memberships, grants, and donations.
The Battleship Missouri Memorial is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. General admission, which includes choice of an optional tour, is $29 per adult and $13 per child (4-12).
