Kamikaze 80th Anniversary – Online Exclusive Exhibit
Location: This exhibit is exclusively online (artifacts not on display)
On April 11, 1945, a Kamikaze Zeke hit the USS Missouri on her starboard side a little below the level of the main deck. In the crash, part of the plane was thrown onto the main deck along with the pilot’s body. Captain William M. Callaghan made the bold decision to prioritize humanity in the midst of brutal warfare and ordered that the pilot be buried at sea with full military honors. This is a small collection of never-before-seen artifacts from that incident. Several of these artifacts will be going on public display for the first time in our upcoming exhibit, Pathway to Peace: USS Missouri's World War II Experience, which will open September 2, 2025, on the 80th Anniversary of the end of World War II.
