USS Missouri, USS Bowfin Memorials Team Up with the U.S. Navy To Improve Roadway Serving the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center
Repaving of Arizona Memorial Drive is Being Done After Hours; No Impact on Tours
Pearl Harbor, HI – (May 22, 2019) – In partnership with the U.S. Navy, the USS Missouri Memorial Association and USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park have teamed up to cover the cost of repaving Arizona Memorial Drive, entry way to the world-famous USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center.
The $850,000 project began May 13 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this week. The laying of new asphalt and restriping of the parking lots, crosswalks and traffic lines is being conducted in the evening to ensure visitation to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center is not affected.
Approximately 10,000 square yards of new asphalt is being applied to areas used by vehicles and pedestrians to access the visitor center, starting from the main entrance off Kamehameha Highway and extending down the roadway past Restaurant 604 to the Admiral’s Boathouse. The roadway area fronting the visitor center – O‘ahu’s most popular attraction – was especially in need of repair, having been worn down due to heavy daily usage by tour buses and traffic.
The USS Missouri Memorial Association and USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park are splitting the cost for the roadway improvements through a provision in their real estate leases with the U.S. Navy, which allows rent paid by the two entities to be used for projects to help maintain Navy property.
“This project supporting the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center epitomizes what was envisioned when the Missouri and Bowfin entered into long-term leases with the Navy,” said Michael Carr, president and CEO of the USS Missouri Memorial Association. “What’s most important is that the facilities and quality of guest experience are being improved for all those who come to see and learn about the historical events and museum memorials of Pearl Harbor.”
