The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes to the way educators did education. Suddenly, distance learning became a stark reality and public educators at every grade level found themselves learning new tools of the trade. Although online programs such as google classroom were not new to everyone, accessing and using all the tools and platforms available in the G Suite were now of utmost importance. However, learning to use those platforms was a definite learning curve. As all of us were following the news for the next steps of protecting the people of our island home, one news report mentioned that the USS Missouri BB-63 would be holding online or virtual field trips. As a result, I followed up with the lead and discovered a perfect opportunity for my 7th grade English classroom students.The person who was instrumental in making the idea a reality was Education Outreach Coordinator, Neil Yamamoto. After several discussions, we agreed to have three one-hour meetings that would help students understand three important historical moments, including the weaponry details of the USS Missouri that were a real hit with the boys! Lastly, all the information led to a culminating activity that involved students in being the mayor or governor for a day during this pandemic. In addition, previous to the actual virtual field trip dates, Mr. Yamamoto provided a written outline that detailed everything we discussed. It helped me stay organized and make sure I had things prepared to support the students. More importantly, Mr. Yamamoto’s historical knowledge was impeccable and his ability to deliver the information to 7th graders, incredible! The students were engaged and enjoyed learning the US history that directly impacted Hawaii. We also enjoyed “touring” the USS Missouri and learning the interesting features of the battleship. Many students are now even more interested in visiting the Arizona Memorial and USS Missouri in person. I would highly recommend visiting the USS Missouri in person or remotely with Mr. Neil Yamamoto and the rest of the staff and leadership at USS Missouri BB-63 to other teachers.
