Battleship Missouri Memorial And Japan’s Kure Maritime Museum Establish Sister Museum Agreement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BATTLESHIP MISSOURI MEMORIAL AND JAPAN’S KURE MARITIME MUSEUM ESTABLISH SISTER MUSEUM AGREEMENT

Pearl Harbor, HI – (October 6, 2015) – In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, the USS Missouri Memorial Association and the Kure Maritime Museum (Yamato Museum), located in Kure, Hiroshima, Japan, have entered into a sister museum partnership to continue strengthening the relationship between the two countries and promote international peace through cultural and educational exchanges.

The agreement will focus on preserving and promoting the history of these battleships and the crews who served aboard them in the 20th century, as well as creating educational opportunities for youth in both countries to further increase awareness of the lessons of war.

“This partnership, a first of its kind for the Battleship Missouri Memorial, brings together two organizations dedicated to educating the public about these significant World War II events to ensure we all learn from the past and continue to move forward with peace,” said Michael Carr, president and CEO of the Battleship Missouri Memorial. “We are honored to have Kure Maritime Museum as a sister museum and thank Director Kazushige Todaka and his team for their continued support and friendship. We look forward to working together on future exhibits and educational exchange programs to benefit both Hawaii’s residents and visitors alike.”

Battleship Missouri Memorial

Since opening in January 1999, the Battleship Missouri Memorial has attracted more than 6-million visitors from around the world with a fascinating tour experience showcasing the USS Missouri’s unique place in history. Located a mere ship’s length from the USS Arizona Memorial, the Mighty Mo completes a historical visitor experience that begins with the “day of infamy” and sinking of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and ends with Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.

The USS Missouri had an astounding career over five decades and three wars – World War II, the Korean War, and Desert Storm – after which it was decommissioned and donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Association operates the Battleship Missouri Memorial as a historic attraction and oversees her care and preservation with the support of visitors, memberships, grants, and donations.

The Battleship Missouri Memorial is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. General admission, which includes choice of an optional tour, is $25 per adult and $13 per child (4-12). Military, kamaaina (local resident) and school group pricing is available. For information or reservations, call (toll-free) 1-877-644-4896 or visit USSMissouri.org.
