Program Components

The Journey with the Stars program includes pre-visit and post-visit materials and lesson plans for classroom teachers to use to help enrich the museum experience.

The program onboard begins with an introduction to our context: the Polynesian Triangle, the Hawaiian Islands, Puʻuloa and the ahupuaʻa system, and the Battleship Missouri now. We divide into three different groups, which will rotate between stations with activities and lessons around Navigation, Astronomy, and History.

What makes the program unique?

Journey with the Stars discusses the navigational tools of the past and present within our unique context. We learn together onboard the historic Battleship Missouri while floating on the waters of Wai Momi within the Puʻuloa area. Participation in this program provides the students with a greater understanding of Hawaiian history, celestial navigation and astronomy, the use of the current technology for aquatic navigation.
