MIGHTY MO VOLUNTEERS RECOGNIZED FOR COMMITMENT TO PERPETUATE HISTORIC BATTLESHIP’S LEGACY
Pearl Harbor, HI – (April 22, 2016) – As April marks National Volunteer Appreciation month, the USS Missouri Memorial Association is honoring the dedicated individuals and organizations that devote their time and energy as volunteers to the Battleship Missouri Memorial.
During World War II, the Battleship Missouri had more than 2,500 sailors maintaining the ship. Today, the USS Missouri Memorial Association has less than 25 ship maintenance staff members, so the organization depends on its outstanding volunteers to help restore and preserve the teak decks, metal decks, bulkheads, displays and equipment.
“The Battleship Missouri Memorial would not be the world-class historical attraction it is today without the generosity and commitment of our extraordinary volunteers,” said Michael Carr, President and CEO of the Battleship Missouri Memorial. “We’re very fortunate to have volunteers from diverse backgrounds and expertise to help ensure this legendary battleship is properly cared for so we can continue to share its remarkable story with residents and visitors for years to come.”
“As a nonprofit organization, we rely on our volunteers and consider them an incredible asset to the preservation of the Mighty Mo,” said Keven Williamson, Director of Volunteers for the Battleship Missouri Memorial. “In 2015, our legion of volunteers donated more than 22,000 hours worth of service, equaling 924 days and valued at more than $511,000 in in-kind support. We are truly grateful for everything they do for us.”
