Captain James Stone, USN (Ret.) Appointed as Vice President of Engineering & Facilities for the Battleship Missouri Memorial
– The USS Missouri Memorial Association announced today the appointment of Captain James “Jim” Stone, USN (Ret.) as Vice President of Engineering & Facilities for the Battleship Missouri Memorial.
A former member of the Association’s Board of Directors, Captain Stone is responsible for overseeing all maintenance, preservation, and restoration projects in support of the retired USS Missouri, America’s last battleship, in its role as a floating historical museum in the waters of Pearl Harbor.
“Captain Stone’s insight as a board member on preserving the Battleship Missouri Memorial was invaluable. His experience and knowledge in ship maintenance is now guiding our efforts on a full-time basis and comes at a crucially important time, as we share the story of her legacy for generations to come,” said Michael Carr, President and CEO of the USS Missouri Memorial Association.
The Battleship Missouri Memorial is currently undergoing a $3-million preservation project of the superstructure that is currently scheduled for completion by this fall. In addition, with the recent agreement between the Association and U.S. Navy on a 25-year lease to keep the USS Missouri berthed in Pearl Harbor, new pier facilities are being considered to enhance the visitor experience and presentation of exhibits.
Captain Stone comes to the Battleship Missouri Memorial from Hawaiian Electric Company, where he most recently served as Manager of Execution, Enterprise Performance Excellence. Prior to that, he worked as a Program Principal Representative for Electric Boat, Inc. in Groton, CT. During his 38-year Navy career, Captain Stone led shipyard and port maintenance operations around the world, including several assignments at Pearl Harbor.
Battleship Missouri Memorial
Since opening in January 1999, the Battleship Missouri Memorial has attracted more than 7-million visitors from around the world with a fascinating tour experience showcasing the USS Missouri’s unique place in history. Located a mere ship’s length from the USS Arizona Memorial, the Mighty Mo completes a historical visitor experience that begins with the “day of infamy” and sinking of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and ends with Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.
The USS Missouri had an astounding career over five decades and three wars – World War II, the Korean War, and Desert Storm – after which it was decommissioned and donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Association operates the Battleship Missouri Memorial as a historic attraction and oversees her care and preservation with the support of visitors, memberships, grants, and donations.
The Battleship Missouri Memorial is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the summer months. General admission, which includes choice of an optional tour, is $27 per adult and $13 per child (4-12). Military, kama‘aina (local resident) and school group pricing is available.
