Students From Around the World Gather on the Battleship Missouri Memorial for a Friendship Ceremony & Peace Signing

Pearl Harbor, HI – (December 8, 2017) – Students from the United States, Japan and Australia gathered

onboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial for a friendship ceremony and peace signing, culminating a

research project – “War and Peace in the Pacific 75.”

The project, put on by the Australian National Maritime Museum, Bi-Centennial Gift Fund, brought

together students from nine schools in the U.S. and Australia to become experts about events during

significant battles of World War II (WWII). Each participating school had to research, write, edit and

create a short video documentary – focusing on the war from the perspective and culture of their home

town.

“While the Mighty Mo is a memorial for many, it serves as a living piece of history for our youth,” said

Dan Parsons, Educational Director of the USS Missouri Memorial Association. “The best learning

happens out of the classroom and aboard this ship where our youth get a different view that’s up-close

and personal.”

The participating schools include:

  • Aliamanu Middle School – Honolulu, Hawaii
  • The Franciscan School – Raleigh, North Carolina
  • Analy High School – Sebastopol, California
  • Ramona High School – Ramona, California
  • Academy of the Canyons – Santa Clarita, California
  • Central Union High School – El Centro, California
  • Amaroo School – Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia
  • Lake Macquarie High School – New South Wales, Australia
  • Sendai Shiryuri Garuken Senior High School, Japan.
  • The “War and Peace in the Pacific 75” project concluded with a ceremony and peace signing agreement

on the USS Missouri, and one youth ambassador designated from each country sharing their experiences

on the project, and their vision for youth being active in developing a peaceful future. The USS Missouri

Memorial Association also hosted all the students to dinner and a one-night stay onboard the Mighty Mo.

    Battleship Missouri Memorial

Since opening in January 1999, the Battleship Missouri Memorial has attracted more than 7-million

visitors from around the world with a fascinating tour experience showcasing the USS Missouri’s unique

place in history. Located a mere ship’s length from the USS Arizona Memorial, the Mighty Mo completes

a historical visitor experience that begins with the “day of infamy” and sinking of the USS Arizona in

Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and ends with Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in

Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.

The USS Missouri had an astounding career over five decades and three wars – World War II, the Korean

War, and Desert Storm – after which it was decommissioned and donated to the USS Missouri Memorial

Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Association operates the Battleship Missouri

Memorial as a historic attraction and oversees her care and preservation with the support of visitors,

    memberships, grants, and donations.

The Battleship Missouri Memorial is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. General admission, which
