  • 5” USMC Mount

This 5” gun mount was operated by the Missouri’s Marine Detachment (MarDet). The Marines provided security and performed ceremonial functions and were the only ones authorized to carry firearms while on board. Though the Marines and the Navy often shared the same goal, Sailors and Marines shared a healthy amount of competition and seldom fraternized.

DID YOU MO?: The Missouri was the last active battleship, and one of the last U.S. warships, to have a Marine detachment assigned aboard.

DID YOU MO?: One of the berthing areas for the enlisted Marines is located on the Second Deck tour route.

  • CEC

2The Combat Engagement Center (CEC) was added to the USS Missouri during her modernization period from 1984-86. Historically, this space was the Flag Officer’s Quarters during the 1940s and 50s. In fact, this was Admiral Halsey’s quarters while the Mighty Mo served as his Third Fleet flagship toward the end of WWII.

When the Missouri was being modernized, this space was converted for use with the modern weapons systems aboard. In this room you will find the control stations for the Tomahawk and Harpoon guided missile systems, the operator’s console for the Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) as well as air and ground radar stations.

The prominent blue chair in the center of the room was reserved for the Tactical Action Officer (TAO) who would oversee and direct the battleship’s combat operations. The illuminated plot tables towards the back of the room provide orientation and proximity of vessels and aircraft in the surrounding area.

DID YOU MO?: While the CEC was used specifically for control of the Missouri’s modern weapons systems, The CIC, or Combat Information System on the Fourth Deck below, adjacent to the Main and Secondary Battery Plot rooms, was always used to control the Missouri’s main and secondary battery guns.
