She Served Here: Military Women in Wartime Hawaii (1944-1945)
A September 1944 headline reported that legislation allowing WAVES, women Marines, and SPARS, the “petticoat components of the Navy, Marine Corps and the Coast Guard,” to serve outside the lower 48 had passed the House. By October, it was official: military women could volunteer for duty in Hawaii.
The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps had become law in May 1942, followed by the WAVES in July, SPARS in November, and the Women’s Marine Corps Reserve in February 1943. However, with the exception of the Women’s Army Corps, these women were initially limited to service within the continental United States. The first members of the Women’s Army Corps arrived in Hawaii in March 1944, and the WAVES, SPARS, and Marine Corps Women’s Reserve arrived in January 1945. They served within the 14th Naval District, at Pearl Harbor and Marine Corps Air Station Ewa, where they took on critical roles in aviation, transportation, and communications.
By V-J Day in August 1945, 21 officers and 366 enlisted Women Marines were serving at MCAS Ewa, while 34 officers and 588 enlisted women were assigned to the Women’s Reserve Battalion, Marine Garrison Forces, 14th Naval District. Approximately 5,000 WAVES were serving at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Together, these women became an important part of the wartime effort in Hawaii, taking on roles that helped keep the military’s operations in the Pacific moving. This presentation explores their experiences, their work, and the lasting significance of their service.
